MIXED-BREED DOGS WELCOMED TO
AKC COMPETITION: THE FUN BEGINS!

The world of competitive dog sports changed forever in April 2010, as the AKC for the first time began to welcome mixed-breed dogs to competition. Mixed breeds and purebreds now compete side by side in agility and obedience, with the highest-scoring dog in each class walking away with the first-place ribbon.

This change has been a long time coming, and Dog Sports at Kim’s was ready, with mixed-breed dogs trained and poised to start their AKC careers.

If you’d like to train your mixed-breed dog to be an AKC winner, DSK is the place for you!

Second-class citizens no more

After initially announcing a program in which mixed breeds and purebreds would compete for similar but different titles and wouldn’t face each other in the ring, the AKC dropped that idea and announced that all dogs would compete head to head, with no distinction between the two.

Mixed breeds will work toward the very same titles their purebred cousins win – from Companion Dog to Obedience Trial Champion, from Novice Agility to Master Agility Champion.

Most handlers seem to like the change and are welcoming the mixed breeds eagerly. Many of us have mixed-breed dogs of our own, and we’re happy that our non-pedigreed dogs now have a place at the table.
Register your dog for competition

To compete in AKC events, each mixed-breed dog must be registered with AKC. For a one-time fee of $35, your dog will be registered for life in the Canine Partners program. You’ll also get a subscription to the AKC’s Family Dog magazine, lifetime enrolment for your dog in AKC’s lost-and-found dog registry, and a 60-day trial membership in the AKC pet health insurance plan.*

The enrolment process is simple, but your dog must be registered in advance. So go to AKC.org and click on “AKC Canine Partners” to get your furry friend signed up today!

Your dog in action

If you’ve ever seen purebred agility dogs on TV – flying over the agility jumps, plunging through tunnels and chutes, scrambling over the A frame, and darting over the dog walk – you probably thought it looked like fun. You might even have wondered how your dog would do in competition.
Now’s your chance to find out! Come join us at DSK and find out just how much fun competing in AKC dog sports can be.
